Not So Bad For It Being A Monday!

Happy Monday Folks!

We started the day off with reading block! Today we focused on close reading a portion of the science text that introduces biomes! The purpose of today's close-reading is summarize a portion of what we read by utilizing the Post-it, Sketch, and Label strategy! Here are the steps to that strategy:
  1. Read the article
  2. Use a Post-It to make a sketch and label of what you've read (using only what you remember from the article)
  3. Orally summarize what you've read using your sketch and labels
  4. Write out your summary using what you said orally, as well as the sketch and labels
After we saw the modeling of this strategy, we practiced up to step 3 on our own!

During Writer's Workshop, we continued to work on our writing stamina during Silent Writing Time! I have also began to confer with students, having them read a story of theirs, noting a positive in their writing, as well as a "grow" that they can work on!

A "glow" and a "grow"

During math today we got with a partner and collaboratively utilized a ruler to measure, in centimeters/millimeters, the sides of various plane shapes in order to solve for the perimeter!

Comparing answers!
Coming back from the lunch we discussed the math exit ticket we did before lunch; I explained to the students that when solving for the perimeter of shapes with many, many, many sides, it's best write out and solve the problem on paper, rather than adding up the sides mentally. Why? Well, mentally adding A LOT of numbers will usually result in an incorrect answer, as it is challenging to keep all the numbers in your head! Also, when adding A LOT of numbers, it's best to add a few numbers at a time, and then taking those sums and adding them together! It's more efficient that way!

Instead of adding 2+4+2+2+4+2+2+4+2+2+4+2 all in one go, it's more efficient to add 2+4+2 four times, and then taking those four sums and adding them up to get the perimeter of the whole shape!
Near the end of the day, we had some PE!

Before I go, I just wanted to share with you one tidbit thing about myself: I love music! I love many bands, artists, and musicians from various genres spanning across various generations! So, I'm going to share with you what I've been listening to recently!

This particular song by The Struts remind me of some good ol' classic rock, sorta along the lines of Queen:

Matt Nathanson's  new single sounds unlike anything he's done before. Gold in the Summertime reminds me of 70's R&B:

Jason Derulo is a pretty popular artist, but I've never heard of this song until very recently! His falsetto reminds me very much of Prince! Want To Want Me reminds me of 80's pop in general!

Speaking of the 80's, many people know and love Michael Jackson! It blew me away when I heard this track by The Weeknd! His voice sounds eerily similar to good ol' MJ!

Like electric-pop? Give BØRNS, a go! The gentleman's falsetto is super insane! Super catchy indeed!

Here's more of that synthy electric-pop, this time from an awesome band known as MisterWives! I've seen them a handful of times, and they always put on a lively, energetic show!

I'm a big fan of Pink Floyd, so when I heard a few songs from Tame Impala, I found their sound to be uncannily similar to that of Roger Waters and company! Psychedelic indeed!

Houndmouth has that indie, folksy, country-rock sound to them! Give their song, Sedona, a listen to!

That's a wrap-up folks! Cheers, and have a good one!
