Earthquake Drills, Main Idea, Sketch & Label, and Comparing Fractions!

Happy Thursday Folks!

We spent the bulk of this morning discussing earthquakes, earthquake drills, and tsunamis! We started out viewing these videos:

Afterwards, this question was posed to us: What's the main point of all of these videos? We provided the main idea and supported it with details in poster form!

After the earthquake drill, we close read an article that discusses Japan's earthquake warning system! We sketched and labeled key words in that article in order to clarify our thinking, and after, we determined the main idea!

Many of us were wondering how a huge tsunami wave could considered a natural disaster? It's only a wave right? This clip clarified the intensity that is a tsunami!

During math today, we started with a Show Me ticket:

9/8 -or- 1/1

After we made a visual representation, we explained our thinking behind our answer!

We also tackled a couple of word problems using the RCDW strategy and we were given an example of an explanation that really shows one's thinking!

Near the end of the day we shared out the second to last Me Bag!

We started to read Roald Dahl's The BFG; ask your child about it! That's the round-up for today folks! Cheers, and have a good one!
